Heidelberg University, Germany offers exceptional accredited postgraduate distance learning programs in Medical Physics.

These English language programs are the result of a long-term collaboration between the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), the Heidelberg University Hospital and the new state-of-the-art heavy ion facility Heidelberg Ion-Beam Therapy Center (HIT).

The focus of the APMR programs is on new physical and technical developments in radiation therapy such as Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), and Heavy Ion Therapy.

Currently, no place in the world offers an exhaustive academic training that fully integrates the modern methods of both medical physics and radiation therapy fully aligned to emerging scientific research issues and technological developments.

The “Master Online” and the ”Postgraduate study tracks” have been established to address this deficit in order to best prepare medical physicists for their increasing, new responsibilities.

Prospective Students:

The APMR programs are designed for adult learners from different areas of expertise in the interdisciplinary field of medical physics (e.g. undergraduate physics student, a practicing medical physicist or just completing a Bachelor’s degree in biomedical technology).

Career Possibilities:

With a MSc or a PG Certificate in APMR successful candidates hold a valuable and worthwhile terminal degree that can open doors to challenging new careers in teaching, research or care services in medical centers, national laboratories, academic institutions, governmental regulatory agencies, and in medical and nuclear industrial facilities.

MSc Graduates will possess the needed specialized technical skills underpinned by a solid theoretical understanding of advanced cancer treatment techniques to be counted as one of the few Medical Physics specialists worldwide.

Blended learning approach:

APMR programs are tailored to fit the adult learner’s busy schedule. The program participants are instructed online (80%) from more than 70 internationally based teaching staff and prominent experts in the theoretical underpinnings of modern radiation therapy from the convenience of their home. During the attendance phases (3-4) they supplement their knowledge through work-based activities and hands-on training in imaging and image analysis, therapy planning, radiation, dosimetry, quality assurance and verification with special focus on the above mentioned fields IMRT, IGRT and ion therapy at cutting edge radiotherapy facilities in Heidelberg.

New  “M0” Medical Physics Basics Course:

Starting October 2014, we offer in response to popular demand an elective course the “M0” Medical Physics Basics to best prepare students to the Master Online (MSc) Advanced Physical Methods in Radiotherapy program. The M0 comprises 4 modules which can be studied on an individual basis.

The M0 course is equivalent to the required prior knowledge in Medical Physics mandatory to start with the Master Online “Advanced Physical Methods in Radiotherapy” program.

Program details at a glance:

Duration:
MSc study track (120 ECTS): two years structured in: 5 online modules, 1 internship module plus Master Thesis (4 semesters)
PG study short study track (30 ECTS): 3 online modules (approx. 1 year)
PG full study track (60 ECTS): 5 online modules and 1 internship module (approx. 1.5 years)
